A hand-made landscape
The 18th-century Timanfaya eruptions covered this area in volcanic ash. Farmers dug pits down to fertile soil and shielded each vine from the wind with crescent-shaped stone walls. Thousands of pits line the black ground in a protected landscape like no other.
Wineries and volcanic malvasía
The signature grape is volcanic malvasía, making fresh, aromatic, saline whites. Along the wine road, wineries open for tours and tastings, some centuries old with wine museums. Harvest here is one of Europe's earliest, in late July and August.
Timanfaya and the volcanoes
- Timanfaya National Park (20–25 min): the Volcano Route and geothermal demonstrations.

- Los Volcanes Natural Park: marked trails around Masdache.
Rural culture
Five minutes away is César Manrique's Monumento al Campesino, a tribute to island farming with a house-museum, craft workshops and a traditional restaurant. Further south, Uga and Yaiza are among Lanzarote's prettiest villages.

Practical tips
- A car is essential. Puerto del Carmen is 15 minutes away, Arrecife 20, Famara 25.
- Water is scarce in the countryside; please use it with care.
Is Masdache for you?
If you want silence, landscape, good wine and a house for family or friends, yes. If you want to walk to the beach, choose Puerto del Carmen or Famara.
